Located in Topeka, Kansas, near the intersection of 6th and Gage, New Beginnings Health Care has been serving Topeka individuals and families since 1981.

Everyone falls out of balance sometime in life. We may suffer depression, anxiety, chronic pain, relationship disappointment, job stress, etc. Seeking help when we need it is the beginning of healing.

Dr. Mary Ann Abbott, PsyD

Mary Ann Abbott, PsyD is a licensed clinical psychologist who has been practicing in the mental health field for over 20 years. Areas of interest and expertise include helping survivors of traumatic experiences, and people suffering from mood disorders such as depression, anxiety, and bipolar illness. Addressing problems of disordered eating patterns is also a special area of interest. She has extensive training and experience in working with anorexia, bulimia, night eating syndrome, and binge eating. She consults with the bariatric surgeons at Tallgrass Surgery Center, providing pre-operative psychological consultations. Relationship issues, life-stage changes and women’s issues are also a focus of psychotherapy. In short, helping people to create a healthy sense of self so they can live an emotionally, physically, mentally, and spiritually balanced life is her primary purpose.

Sheri Daudet, LSCSW

Sheri Daudet, LSCSW is a clinical social worker and provides psychotherapy services. Prior to joining New Beginnings, she worked as a clinician for the Mental Health Center of East Central Kansas, and prior to that she was owner of Creative Self Hypnotherapy. Sheri is a graduate of Washburn University and holds a master of social work degree. She uses a combination of traditional and alternative therapeutic approaches to address each person's unique set of experiences and challenges. Areas of interests include working with mood disorders, such as anxiety, depression, and Bipolar, to assist individuals experiencing these disorders develop a greater sense of self determination and empowerment. She also helps those dealing with common life stressors like relationship issues, occupational problems, and grief and loss issues. Her training in hypnotherapy and neurolinguistic programming (NLP) has provided her with clinical experience in working with health issues such as pain management and chronic health conditions.

Kenneth J. Hagen, LSCSW

Kenneth J. Hagen, LSCSW has been a part of the New Beginnings Health Care team since 2001, offering individual, couples and family therapy. In addition to his work treating anxiety and depression, he has specialized skills in working with chronic pain and stress disorders. He offers biofeedback services with special emphasis on heart rate variability training. In addition, he can teach a range of behavioral skills for coping and effective living.  Albert Einstein said, “The significant problems we face cannot be solved at the level of thinking that created them.” This may help explain why so many of us have difficulty resolving traumatic experience. Mr. Hagen has training in the use of Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), a technique in therapy found helpful in resolving trauma.  Relationships at work or at home can become strained. Conflict resolution and communication skills assist people to address dissent. Sometimes we need a guide, sometimes a teacher. Mr. Hagen is glad to be of service.

Mari Mahinay

Mari Mahinay, APRN-BC is board Certified by the ANCC in Psychiatric Mental Health Graduate of Wichita State University with a Masters of Science degree in Nursing Graduate of Antioch University with a Masters of Arts degree in Counseling Psychology, Studied at the Institute of Body Psychotherapy in Switzerland to practice as a 5 Rhythms Movement Therapist Shamanic studies with Sandra Ingerman / Dr. Michael Harner

Robert E. Schulman, PhD, JD, ABPP, APFP Robert E. Schulman, PhD, JD, ABPP, APFP is a clinical and forensic psychologist. He holds a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Illinois and a law degree from the University of Kansas. Dr. Schulman is board certified in Clinical and Forensic Psychology. He has practiced with New Beginnings for more than 25 years, and before that, was Director of Law and Psychiatry programs at the Menninger Foundation in Topeka, Kansas. His present practice continues to be in Clinical and Forensic psychology with an emphasis on assessments. Dr. Schulman accepts referral from physicians, attorneys, courts, and insurance companies.
Dr. Douglas D. Sheafor, M.D.

Douglas D. Sheafor, MD has practiced psychiatry and psychoanalysis in Topeka for over 30 years. He practices with adults 18 years and older and includes psychotherapy, medication management, and hospital treatment if needed. The treatment focus will include the total health of the individual moving toward a more fulfilling life.

Brenda Volz, ARNP-BC

Brenda Volz, ARNP-BC has been a nurse practitioner in private practice for the past five years. Prior to that, she worked as a registered nurse in the mental health field for over twenty years. Her experience has included inpatient, outpatient, and private practice settings. Brenda’s current focus is in helping people with mental and emotional suffering learn new ways of being. Balance is often elusive in today’s fast-paced life. Learning to balance the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual aspects of our humanness often brings joy and contentment. Treatment may include therapy, suggestions for practicing changes in lifestyle, or medications.
